The Moeda Caves are located in S. Mamede, in the municipality of Batalha, just 2 km from Fátima and 15 km from Batalha.
The discovery of the Caves was made by two hunters who were chasing a fox that had taken refuge in a cave in the middle of the forest. Motivated by curiosity, upon entering and walking through the interior, they realized the natural beauty of the caves and discovered several galleries filled with countless limestone formations that would prove to be of scientific and tourist interest, which today are part of the visitable area of the cave!
