Fátima - Batalha - Alcobaça - Nazaré - Óbidos
Full Day (8 hours) From 290€.
Fatima is one of the most esteemed religious centers in the world, where the three shepherds allegedly witnessed the apparition of Our Lady on May 13, 1917.
Legend has it that "a lady brighter than the sun" appeared before the three children, alerting them to the importance of praying and telling them that they would appear again on that same date and time for five consecutive months. He also promised to reveal his identity and perform a miracle on the day of his last appearance.
In the following months, Our Lady revealed three prophecies to the children. On October 13, at the appointed time, about 70,000 people gathered to watch the last apparition. As the people prayed, Our Lady appeared and performed what became known as "Miracle of the Sun": the sun began to spin like a fireball and the intense rain that had fallen until then ceased and the clothes of the people remained miraculously dry.
The most suitable time to visit Fatima is during the days of pilgrimages, on 13 May and October, when pilgrims fill the streets, anxious to fulfill the promises made to Our Lady or to live the unique spiritual environment felt on these occasions .
Visit the imposing neoclassical basilica that stands in the heart of the Sanctuary of Fatima and the tombs of the three little shepherds inside. The small Chapel of the Apparitions is also worth a visit, since it marks the site of the apparitions of Our Lady of Fatima. Do not miss the large section of the Berlin Wall next to the chapel (symbol of the end of Communism, revealed as one of Fatima's secrets) and visit the homes of the three shepherds in the village of Aljustrel. Take the Via Sacra - one of the most popular routes in Fatima, which leads pilgrims through the 14 chapels that represent the different seasons of the Passion of Christ.
In Fatima you will have to visit the small town of Fatima for anyone from noon or the duration of a full day, so that you can take in completely the importance of this important place of Catholic pilgrimage.
Nazaré is a picturesque fishing village, known for its traditions and its long beach, where fishermen still extend their nets. We remember the giant wave surfed in January 2013 by the Hawaiian Garrett McNamara in Nazaré, Portugal. If you do not remember, watch the video below. It's really scary to see the power of a 90-foot wave. Unfortunately, this drop, which had everything to beat the Hawaiian's own world record, has been contested by big riders. The controversy raised is that the wave does not break. Beating the world record or not, Garrett has already secured his space in the 2013 BillabongXXL, an Oscar for the biggest waves ever surfed.
After visiting the visit go to the Monastery of Batalha - a true masterpiece of Gothic architecture in Portugal. Do not miss the magnificent Monastery of Alcobaça, a magnificent medieval complex that incorporates a 12th-century church. In Alcobaça you can visit a small and very quiet city located in one of the best wine regions of the country.
The Óbidos tour is great for those interested in seeing a very old fortified city. Due to its excellent location by the sea and as the arms of the Lagoon reached the hill, these lands have always been inhabited, which is confirmed by the Lower Paleolithic station of Outeiro da Assenta.
Here a Celtibero castro was formed, facing the west. It is known that here the Phoenicians traded, and today more properly than the Romans here settled down, being probable that the south tower of the Facho, had its origin in a watchtower of Roman construction, like advanced outpost of the city of Eburobrittium , a large urban city found and in an archeological work phase.
On January 11, 1148, the first king, D. Afonso Henriques, supported by Gonçalo Mendes da Maia, took Óbidos to the Arabs, after the siege of November. The Cruise of Memory is a simple monument of the time, later restored. Obidos belonged to the defensive pentagon (of the five castles), from the center of the kingdom, idealized by the Templars.
